TuneSplit is a free AI vocal remover that runs Demucs htdemucs, an open-source separation model from Meta AI Research. Upload a song and download the instrumental and the vocals as separate MP3s, with no sign-up. It is unlimited in your browser with no upload (songs up to 8 minutes), or 1 fast server split a day, up to 10 minutes. A 3-minute song takes about 20 to 60 seconds on the server.

Hear what the AI separates

This is a real result from the same engine, on Sunlight, an indie pop track we generated ourselves so it carries no copyright question. Play the original, then the instrumental and the vocals, to hear exactly what the model took out and what it left.

Sunlight (version A), first 60 s, split with Demucs htdemucs into 4 stems; instrumental = drums + bass + other. Unedited output.

Listen to the gaps between sung phrases in the instrumental. In a clean separation they sound like the band alone. A faint ghost of the voice, often called bleed, is the usual sign of a hard mix: heavy reverb, stacked harmonies, or a voice sitting in the same range as a synth.

AI vocal removal vs the old center-channel trick

Before neural networks, free vocal removers cancelled the center of the stereo image: they subtracted the left channel from the right, because lead vocals are usually panned dead center. It is still what some free apps and the Audacity Vocal Reduction effect do. The table shows why AI replaced it.

Center-channel cancelAI separation (Demucs)
How it worksSubtracts left from right, removing whatever is in the middleA neural network predicts which sounds are the voice and which are the band
Bass and kick drumAlso centered, so they get thinner or vanishKept in the instrumental
Reverb and stereo backing vocalsStay in, so you hear a ghostly voiceMostly removed with the voice
Mono recordingsDo nothing at allWork the same as stereo
Acapella outputNot possibleYes, the vocals come out as their own file
SpeedInstantAbout 20 to 60 seconds for 3 minutes on the server

If a tool gives you the instrumental but never the acapella, or if the bass drops out with the voice, it is probably cancelling the center rather than using an AI model.

Which AI model is behind the tool

Most vocal removers do not say what they run. We do, because the model decides the quality more than the website around it.

  • Demucs htdemucs (what TuneSplit uses): a hybrid model from Meta AI Research that looks at the waveform and the spectrogram together. Open source, well studied, strong on vocals, drums and bass.
  • MDX-Net and Roformer models: popular in the Ultimate Vocal Remover community and on MVSEP, with very clean vocals on some material. Some paid services run their own variants.
  • Spleeter: the 2019 model from Deezer that started the free vocal remover wave. Fast, but it leaves more bleed than newer models.
  • Proprietary models: LALAL.AI and others train their own networks. Results can be good, but you cannot check what changed between versions.

TuneSplit runs the same Demucs model on our server and in your browser, so the free unlimited in-browser mode gives the same separation, just slower: a few minutes for a 3-minute song on a laptop. The first browser run downloads the model once.

remusic.ai offers free downloads without a login. LALAL.AI separates more instrument types, such as strings and wind, and has a polished app. What TuneSplit adds is a named model, a download on the free plan, and a mode that never uploads your file at all.

Getting the cleanest result from an AI vocal remover

  1. Start from the best file you have. WAV or FLAC keeps the high frequencies the model uses to tell breath and consonants from cymbals.
  2. Pick the studio version. Live recordings mix crowd noise and room echo into the voice.
  3. Expect backing vocals to go with the lead. The model treats every voice as vocals.
  4. Check the quiet parts. Bleed is easiest to hear when the band drops out.
  5. Play both files together. They should rebuild the original; if a sound is missing from both, the model struggled with it.

Frequently asked questions

What is an AI vocal remover?

An AI vocal remover uses a neural network trained on multitrack recordings to separate the singing voice from the music in a finished song. Unlike the old trick of cancelling the center of the stereo image, it keeps the bass and drums intact and can also give you the voice alone as an acapella.

Which AI vocal remover is free?

TuneSplit is free with a download and no sign-up. It runs unlimited in your browser with no upload for songs up to 8 minutes, or 1 fast server split a day up to 10 minutes. Both modes use the Demucs htdemucs model and give you the instrumental and vocals as MP3 files.

What AI model does TuneSplit use?

Demucs htdemucs, the hybrid transformer version of Demucs released by Meta AI Research. It is open source and one of the most widely used separation models. The same model runs on our server and, in browser mode, on your own device.

Is an AI vocal remover better than Audacity's vocal reduction?

For most songs, yes. Audacity's built-in Vocal Reduction and Isolation effect works by cancelling the center channel, which also weakens the bass and kick and leaves reverb behind. An AI model separates by sound, so the instrumental stays full and you can keep the vocal as well.

Can the AI remove vocals completely?

Often nearly, rarely perfectly. On clean studio mixes the voice usually disappears, but heavy reverb, doubled vocals or a voice that shares its range with a synth can leave faint traces. Listening to the quiet passages before you download tells you how clean your track is.

Does it work on my phone?

Yes. The tool runs in Safari or Chrome on iPhone and Android with nothing to install. On a phone, the Fast server mode is the better choice because browser mode needs memory and a few minutes of processing.

Can I split a song without uploading it, for free and without limits?

Yes. Choose In your browser above the drop zone. The same Demucs htdemucs model runs on your own device, so the file is never uploaded and there is no daily limit, for 2 or 4 stems and songs up to 8 minutes. The first run downloads the 172 MB model once. It is slower than the server, usually a few minutes for a 3-minute song, and works best in a recent Chrome, Edge or Safari on a laptop or desktop.

Is it legal to remove vocals from a song with AI?

Removing vocals for private practice, study or karaoke at home is generally fine. Publishing or selling an instrumental of someone else's song needs permission from the rights holder. Only upload recordings you own or are licensed to use.
