Remove Music From a Video and Keep the Voice

Recorded a talk, a vlog or an interview and the background music is too loud, or you need the speech without the song? Upload the video and TuneSplit separates the voice from the music. You download the voice track as an MP3 and put it back under your video in any editor.

To remove music from a video, upload the MP4 or MOV to TuneSplit. It separates the audio track into voice and music with the Demucs htdemucs model, and you download the voice as an MP3, then replace the audio in your video editor. It is free for 3 files a day, up to 10 minutes each, with no sign-up.

What you get back

TuneSplit works on sound, not pictures. When you upload a video, it reads the audio track and splits it into two files: Vocals, which holds speech and singing, and Music, which holds everything else. Both download as MP3. You do not get a new video file back, so the last step is putting the voice track back under your footage in an editor. It takes about a minute, and the steps for common editors are below.

Because the files start together at zero and have the same length, the voice lines up with the picture as long as you place it at the very start of the timeline.

Put the clean voice back on your video

EditorSteps
CapCutTap the clip, choose Volume and set it to 0. Add Audio, Extracted or From device, pick the Vocals MP3 and drag it to the start.
iMovieSelect the clip and drag its volume to zero. Drag the Vocals MP3 into the timeline under the clip, starting at 0:00.
Premiere ProUnlink or mute the original audio track. Import the Vocals MP3 and drop it on a new audio track at 00:00:00:00.
DaVinci ResolveMute the original audio track in the Edit page. Drag the Vocals MP3 to a new track and snap it to the first frame.
ClipchampDetach the audio from the clip and delete it. Upload the Vocals MP3 and place it at the start.

Want quiet music instead of none? Add the Music stem on a second track and turn it down by 15 to 20 dB under the voice.

Good uses and honest limits

Separating voice from music works best when the voice is clear and close to the microphone.

ClipHow well it worksWhy
Vlog or talk with background musicVery wellSpeech is in front and the music sits under it
Interview or podcast clip with a music bedVery wellTwo clear layers, voice and music
Wedding or event video with a DJMixedRoom echo and crowd noise blur the voices
Someone singing over a songPartlyBoth singers end up in the Vocals stem together
Wind, traffic or crowd noiseNot the right toolNoise is not music; use a noise reduction tool

If the voice in the Vocals stem sounds a little thin, try adding a small amount of the Music stem back at a low level. It often sounds more natural than total silence.

Copyright claims on YouTube and other platforms

People often remove music after a video gets a copyright claim. Removing the song can help, because the claimed music is no longer clearly in your upload. But we cannot promise that any platform will clear a claim: detection systems may still match traces, and a claim on the video itself is between you and the rights holder. If you got a claim, the platform's own tools, such as YouTube's option to remove a song from a claimed segment, are the official route. This tool is for cleaning up your own recordings and footage you have the rights to use.

Frequently asked questions

How do I remove background music from a video but keep the voice?

Upload the video to the tool above with 2 stems selected. Download the Vocals stem as an MP3, mute the original audio in your video editor and place the Vocals file at the start of the timeline.

Does it give me a video back?

No. TuneSplit returns audio only: the voice and the music as separate MP3 files. You put the voice back on your video in an editor such as CapCut, iMovie, Premiere Pro or DaVinci Resolve.

Is it free?

Yes, 3 files a day, up to 10 minutes each, with no sign-up. After that, each started 5 minutes costs 30 credits.

My video is too big to upload. What can I do?

The upload limit is 150 MB. Export just the audio from your editor or phone as an MP3, which is far smaller, and upload that instead. The result is the same.

Will removing the music fix a YouTube copyright claim?

It may help, but no tool can guarantee it. Detection systems can still match traces, and the claim is decided by the platform and the rights holder. YouTube's own editor can also remove a claimed song from a segment.

Can it remove wind or crowd noise?

Not well. It separates voice from music, not from noise. For wind, hum or traffic, a noise reduction tool is the better choice.

Can I keep the music and remove the voice instead?

Yes. Download the Music stem instead of the Vocals. That gives you the background music without speech or singing.

Is my video private?

Files go to private storage, are used only to make your result, and are deleted within 24 hours. They are never used for training. Upload only footage you own or have permission to use.
