Lyric and structure tips for this genre
- R&B is about intimacy. Write in the second person (you) and keep the lines conversational.
- Leave space in lines. Fewer words per bar give room for the vocal runs and harmonies the genre is known for.
- Use a hook that is a short phrase repeated with small melodic changes; the pre-chorus can be spoken or whispered.
- Rhyme softly. Near rhymes and internal rhymes sound more natural in R&B than perfect rhymes.
- Describe the vocal: breathy, smooth, falsetto, layered harmonies. These change the result more than the genre label.
- Add a bridge where the groove drops out and the voice is alone, then returns.
Hear the engine first
Paper Boats shows the engine's gentle sung vocal; Late Shift shows its groove and bass. Use them to judge vocal tone and low end.
Every generation returns two versions from MiniMax Music v2 and ACE-Step, which often differ in arrangement.
