Lyric and structure tips for this genre
- Write 16-bar verses: four lines of setup, four of detail, four of a turn, four that land the point. The hook is usually 4 or 8 bars.
- Rhyme inside lines, not only at the ends. Multi-syllable rhymes (basement, placement) sound like hip hop; simple end rhymes sound like a nursery rhyme.
- Match flow to tempo. Around 90 bpm gives room for dense bars; at 140 bpm trap, use fewer words and more repetition and ad-libs.
- Put a repeated hook in the chorus that is easy to chant. Keep the verse lyrics specific: names of streets, brands you can say, objects.
- Mark ad-libs in brackets, for example (yeah), and keep them short.
- Diss, roast and personal bars should be about friends who are in on it. See our diss track page for that format.
