Is your MP3 a good candidate?
An MP3 is a finished audio file, not notes. Turning it back into notes only works when the pitches are easy to follow, so what is inside the MP3 matters more than the format.
| What the MP3 is | Expect | Do this |
|---|---|---|
| A solo piano or keyboard recording | Good, ready to edit | Convert as is |
| A voice memo of you humming or singing | Fair to good for a melody | Turn on One note at a time |
| A guitar or sax line, no band | Fair to good | Convert as is, raise shortest note a bit |
| A full pop, rock or EDM song | Rough and messy | Split stems first, convert one stem |
| Heavy drums, noise, a low-bitrate rip | Poor | Use a cleaner source if you have one |
No clip limit, no upload
Several free MP3-to-MIDI pages convert only the first 20 to 30 seconds, or a couple of files, or ask you to sign in before the download. This one has no clip or file-count limit: the whole MP3 up to 6 minutes is transcribed, because your own computer does the work.
That also means the MP3 is not copied to a server. Reading the file, running the model, drawing the piano roll and building the .mid all happen in the page.
From a full song: the two-step route
- Open the stem splitter, drop the MP3 and download the stem you care about (piano, guitar, bass or vocals).
- Drop that stem into this converter. The model now hears one instrument instead of five.
This is the biggest single improvement you can make. Even then, treat the MIDI as a first draft: fix wrong notes in your DAW's piano roll.
What the MIDI file contains
- Note pitches, start times, lengths and velocities (how hard each note was played).
- A single track at 120 BPM with notes at their real times, so it lines up with your MP3.
- Pitch bends only if you switch them on; they are off by default because some players handle them badly.
- No audio, no instrument sound, no lyrics, no drum map.
Frequently asked questions
Can I convert an MP3 to MIDI for free?
Yes. This converter is free with no sign-up and no clip limit, for MP3 files up to 6 minutes.
Does the MP3 get uploaded?
No. The MP3 is read and transcribed in your browser. Only the small model files are downloaded, and they are the same for everyone.
Why does my pop song come out messy?
The model follows pitched notes, and a full song has vocals, bass, guitars, drums and effects playing at once. Split the song into stems first and convert one stem.
Will the MIDI sound like the MP3?
No. MIDI holds notes, not sound. When you open it in a DAW or on a keyboard, the instrument you assign decides how it sounds.
Can it convert an MP3 to MIDI for piano?
Yes, and piano is the case that works best. For a mixed song, use the piano extractor first, then convert the piano stem.
Can I convert MIDI back to MP3 here?
No. This tool only goes from audio to MIDI. The preview synth is for checking the notes, not for exporting audio.
Does it work with WAV and M4A too?
Yes: MP3, WAV and M4A are decoded by your browser. If a file will not open, export it as MP3 or WAV from your recorder and try again.
